Dear Parents/Guardians:
During the December 17, 2019 Board meeting, the Edmonton Catholic School Division (ECSD) Board of Trustees approved a motion for the commencement of the formal process to consider St. Basil Catholic Elementary Junior High School for closure for the start of the 2020 school year. We recommend that the elementary Polish Bilingual program be relocated to St. Angela Catholic Elementary School, the junior high Polish Bilingual program be relocated to Sir John Thompson Catholic Junior High School, and the Jean Forest Leadership Academy be relocated to St. Cecilia Catholic Junior High School. Please know that a decision has not been made about whether to close the school at this time.
St. Basil Catholic Elementary Junior High School has been identified as possessing one or more factors that put into question the viability of keeping the school active. Current enrolment, projected declining enrolment, and low utilization are concerns.
To ensure that a decision is made in the best interests of both students and the Division, a public-meeting process will take place as outlined in the Board Policy 14 – School and Program Closures.
The meeting will provide insight and information regarding the school’s possible closure. Parents, guardians and community members will have the opportunity to learn about what is being considered, ask questions and offer feedback.
Further information regarding the meeting will be communicated in January 2020.

Throughout the consultation process, ECSD administration will collect all community feedback and provide it to the Board for their consideration. The Board will make a final decision, by vote, regarding the possible closure of St. Basil Catholic Elementary Junior High School at a Public Board meeting on Tuesday March 17, 2020.
I encourage you to attend the meeting on February 12, 2020, ask questions and share your thoughts regarding the school’s possible closure. The Board of Trustees will take into consideration all the information and feedback received before making a final decision.

During the December 17, 2019 Edmonton Catholic School District (ECSD) Board meeting, it was put forward to close St. Basil Catholic Elementary/Junior High School for the start of the 2020 School Year.

The reasons for this proposed closure are:
1. Low current enrollment
2. Projected declining enrollment
3. Low utilization of the current school.

The proposal recommends to split the current elementary bilingual program, junior high bilingual program and the non-biligual Jean Forest Leadership Academy (JFLA) and relocate them to 3 different schools:
1. The elementary Polish Bilingual program to be relocated to St. Angela Catholic Elementary School (13430 – 132 A Street)
2. The junior high Polish Bilingual program to Sir John Thompson Junior High School (13525 – 132 Ave)
3. JFLA all girls academy to St. Cecilia Catholic Junior High School (8830 – 132 Ave).

This proposal and split will cause the Catholic Polish Bilingual Program to be lost and cause undue hardship on the kids involved. The changes will cause a disruption in their lives, impacting academic achievements and social development.

Szkoła Św. Bazylego przez ponad 30 lat gości program dwujęzyczny angielsko-polski, gdzie uczniowie mogą pogłębiać swój język i poznawać kulturę polską. Jest to jedyna Katolicka szkoła dwujęzyczna angielsko-polska w Północnej Ameryce. Centralnie położona szkoła wspiera uczniów ze wszystkich środowisk i oferuje unikalny program nauki polskiej kultury i tradycji religijnych.

Podczas spotkania Edmonton Catholic School District (ECSD) w dniu 17 grudnia 2019 r. Zaproponowano aby katolicka szkoła podstawowa / gimnazjum św. Bazylego została zamknięta na początek roku szkolnego 2020.

Przyczyny proponowanego zamknięcia są następujące:
1. Niski poziom rejestracji
2. Przewidywany spadek rejestracji
3. Niskie wykorzystanie obecnej szkoły. We wniosku zaleca się podzielenie obecnych programów dwujęzycznych na poziomie podstawowym i gimnazjum i przeniesienie ich do 3 różnych szkół.

Ta propozycja spowoduje utratę Katolickiego Polskiego Dwujęzycznego Programu i spowoduje nadmierne trudności dla zaangażowanych dzieci. Zmiany spowodują zakłócenia w ich życiu, wpływając na osiągnięcia naukowe i rozwój społeczny. Zapraszamy do wzięcia udziału w podnoszeniu świadomości i wsparcia, aby zapobiec zamknięciu szkoły.
